Some Fracking Foes Use Faulty Science
The debate concerning the environmental costs associated with oil exploration has been an emotional one in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Environmentalists have claimed an increase in cancer rates in the areas surrounding fracking sites. Some claims, such as those involving the Barnett Shale area, have no basis in fact according to sources cited in the linked article. While it is natural to question the research from those with a financial stake in the driling, environmentalist claims must also be viewed as coming from someone with an agenda.

I wrote a large research paper on the environmental effects of hydraulic fracturing, and struggled for weeks to find any evidence of contamination. My main evidence ended up being a group of cows dying from drinking spilled fracturing fluid. I do think it is important to monitor this practice, but I think environmentalists are making it seem much more dangerous to the environment than it has proved to be.
